ALIGNING YOUR WELLNESS AND FAITH JOURNEY

Each morning, I make it a point to meditate on a verse from the Bible, asking myself how I can apply it to my life. This practice isn’t just about reflecting on the words, it’s about engraving them deeply into my heart and allowing them to guide my actions throughout the day. Today’s Bible verse is Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”

We often invite God into our work, relationships, and personal struggles, but how often do we invite Him into our wellness journey? We may tend to compartmentalize our faith and our wellness, but the truth is, God’s Word is meant to influence every area of our lives, including our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Our wellness journey is a holistic pursuit, one that aligns deeply with our faith, and this verse serves as a reminder that God’s teachings are meant to shape how we approach every aspect of our health and well-being.

This thought led me to reflect on how I can apply this scripture more intentionally to my wellness journey, how I can store God’s Word deeply in my heart to support and strengthen my physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By memorizing and internalizing these scriptures, we create a solid foundation for our wellness journey, empowering us to stay disciplined, resilient, and aligned with God’s will.

When we reflect on this verse, it’s clear that it speaks to an intentional act of safeguarding God’s Word. Just as we protect our physical health with exercise, nourishing food, and rest, we are called to protect our hearts and minds by deeply storing God’s Word. This is not just about intellectual knowledge but about embracing the truth of His Word spiritually and allowing it to guide our thoughts, decisions, and actions, especially in moments of stress, doubt, or physical exhaustion.

The purpose of internalizing God’s Word is not only to resist sin or fear, but also to help us overcome challenges on our wellness journey. Whether it’s pushing through a difficult workout, maintaining healthy habits, navigating emotional struggles, or combating negative self-talk, God’s Word equips us to face these challenges with strength and perseverance. By deeply hiding His Word in our hearts, we arm ourselves with the wisdom and strength we need to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.

This practice aligns with the truth that true faith is not passive. It requires us to actively apply God’s Word in our everyday lives, including our wellness practices. The Word of God becomes our anchor in the storm, our guide through temptation, and our strength when we feel weak. It empowers us to live out our faith in practical ways, like making healthy choices, managing stress, and finding peace in our hearts.

PROVERBS 119:11 – THIS BIBLE VERSE CONSISTS OF 3 KEY PRINCIPLES:

  1. Memorizing Scripture: By remembering key verses, we can draw on God’s Word during challenges, temptations, or times of decision-making.
  2. Internalizing God’s Truths: It’s not just about knowing the Bible, but letting it transform our thoughts, actions, and character.
  3. Strength in Temptation: Just like Jesus quoted Scripture when tempted (Matthew 4:1-11), we, too, can rely on God’s Word for strength.

APPLYING THE 3 KEY PRINCIPLES OF PSALM 119:11 TO THE NINE PILLARS OF WELLNESS WITH SCRIPTURE AS OUR GUIDE

  1. STARTING YOUR DAY WITH PURPOSE AND GRATITUDE

Why It Matters:

Mornings are sacred to me, as they set the foundation for my day ahead. I usually and ideally when in routine, start my day at 04:00am and the first thing I do is make a cup of coffee and either watch a sermon or spend time with the verse of the day and for today, it was the latter. With starting your day with intention and gratitude, we transform our normal routine, as we center ourselves in God’s love and which helps you align your spirit with God’s purpose. Inviting Him into these early moments creates a foundation to face the day with inner-peace, clarity, focus, and strength. Gratitude also shifts your mindset, opening your heart to the blessings already present in your life.

Scriptures:

  1. Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
  2. Psalm 5:3: “In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly”.

Application:

  1. Before reaching for your phone or diving into your to-do list, pause to thank God for a new day. Say aloud, “Thank You, Lord, for Your steadfast love and fresh mercies.”
  2. Before you begin your day, pause for a moment of prayer or meditation. Reflect on God’s faithfulness and thank Him for the gift of a new day.
  3. Create a gratitude journal where you write down three things you’re thankful for each morning. Pair this with a verse to set the tone for your day.
  4. Write a verse on a sticky note and place it on your mirror or desk. As you see it throughout the day, it will serve as a reminder of your morning conversation with God.
  5. Listen to a worship song or read a devotion as you sip your tea or coffee, inviting God into your morning routine.

  1. MENTAL HEALTH AND DISCIPLINE

Why It Matters:

By now, you all know about my deep passion and advocacy for mental health, which I consider one wellness pillar which really flows into all pillars and areas of your life. Our minds are battlegrounds for anxiety, doubt, fear, the Imposter Syndrome and many other issues. Yet, God calls us to peace and resilience, offering us His strength to face life’s challenges. Our thoughts shape our actions, and our mental health directly affects our ability to pursue wellness. Discipline in managing our thoughts and emotions allows us to align our minds with God’s will. By focusing on His Word, we find peace and clarity amidst life’s distractions and challenges and approach life struggles with grace and confidence.

Scriptures:

  1. Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and minds.”
  2. 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Application:

Create and use a “Peace Plan” for Stressful Moments. How:

  1. Identify Your Triggers
    1. Reflect on situations that typically cause you stress or anxiety.
    2. Write them down to gain clarity and awareness of when you might need to use your peace plan.

  1. Prepare a Prayer or Affirmation
    1. Personalize Philippians 4:6-7 into a prayer, such as: “Lord, I release my worries and concerns to You. Fill my heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding”.
    2. Memorize this prayer or keep it written in a journal, on your phone, or on a sticky note in a visible spot.

  1. Create a Calm Environment
    1. Designate a peaceful space where you can retreat when feeling overwhelmed. This could be a quiet corner in your home, a favourite park bench, or even your car.
    2. Keep calming items there, like a journal, a comforting scripture card, or soft instrumental music.

  1. Practice Breathing Techniques
    1. Learn deep-breathing exercises: inhale deeply through your nose for four counts, hold for four counts, then exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts.
    2. Combine this with reciting the prayer or scripture to anchor your thoughts.

  1. Set a Reminder or Prompt
    1. Create reminders for moments of peace during the day. Use phone alarms or sticky notes with messages like “Pause and pray” or “Breathe deeply.”
    2. This helps you build the habit of turning to your peace plan even before stress arises.

  1. Journal Your Worries
    1. Write down your concerns in a journal to release them from your mind.
    2. After writing, pray over your list, surrendering each worry to God and asking for His peace.

  1. Use a Scripture Card
    1. Write Philippians 4:6-7 on a small card and carry it with you.
    2. When anxiety strikes, pull it out, read it aloud, and meditate on its truth.

  1. Seek Support
    1. Share your peace plan with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor.
    2. Ask them to pray with you or remind you of your plan when you’re facing challenges.

This “Peace Plan” principle is one which I look forward to mapping out and I highly advise you do the same. By consistently applying these steps, your “peace plan” becomes a practical tool to help you lean into God’s promises and experience His peace in moments of stress.

Replace Negative Thoughts with God’s Truth

  1. Recognize That You Are Not Your Thoughts
    1. Acknowledge that your thoughts don’t define who you are. Thoughts are fleeting, and you have control over how you respond to them. When negative or anxious thoughts arise, remind yourself that you can choose to focus on the truth.

  1. Replace Lies with God’s Truth
    1. Whenever you notice thoughts that conflict with God’s Word, replace them with the truth of who you are in Christ. For instance, if you feel unworthy, counter that thought with Psalm 139:14: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” If you’re anxious about your future, remind yourself of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord… plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

  1. Practice Mindful Affirmations
    1. Take time each day to declare truths over yourself. Create affirmations based on scripture, like: “I am loved, chosen, and empowered by God.” Repeat these affirmations whenever negative thoughts arise to reinforce your identity in Christ and create new, healthier thought patterns.

  1. Lean on God’s Identity
    1. In moments of doubt or discouragement, remind yourself of who you are in Christ: forgiven, accepted, and a beloved child of God. Reflect on 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Allow God’s truth to reshape your self-view and replace negative thoughts with His identity for you.

By applying these steps, you can shift your mindset, embracing peace and aligning your thoughts with the truth of God’s Word.

  1. PHYSICAL STRENGTH – EXERCISE

Why It Matters:

Your body is a masterpiece created by God. Physical activity is not just about appearances and fitness; it’s an act of stewardship, honouring the gift of health and vitality that God has given you. Movement strengthens not just your body but also your mind and spirit. It’s about having the energy, strength, and vitality empowering you to serve others through what you do daily, to fulfil your purpose in your day-to-day life and to glorify God joyfully!

Scriptures:

  1. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you… Therefore, glorify God in your body.”
  2. Isaiah 40:29-31: “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless… Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.”

Application:

  1. Dedicate your workouts to God. Pray before you begin, asking Him to give you the strength and energy to move with purpose.
  2. Choose activities that bring you joy and align with how God uniquely designed you, whether it’s walking, dancing, or strength training.
  3. On days when exercise feels hard, lean on prayer. Ask God to renew your strength and give you the energy to move with purpose.

  1. NOURISHMENT – DIET/NUTRITION/HEALTHY EATING

Why It Matters:

This is a given, what you put into your body affects your energy, focus, and overall well-being. What most people aren’t are of, is that there is a strong connection between your gut and your brain and mind. Nourishing your body with wholesome foods is an act of gratitude for the life God has given you. It’s about fuelling and enabling yourself to live out your purpose, not restricting or punishing yourself.

Scriptures:

  1. Genesis 1:29: “I give you every seed-bearing plant… they will be yours for food”.
  2. 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”.

Application:

  1. Bless your meals, acknowledging God as the provider. As you eat, remind yourself that nourishing your body is part of glorifying Him.
  2. Plan balanced meals with gratitude, incorporating natural, wholesome foods that sustain and energize you.
  3. Practice mindful eating, focusing on the gift of each bite and how it strengthens you to fulfil God’s purpose.

  1. FINANCIAL WELLNESS: ALIGNING YOUR FINANCES WITH GOD’S WORD

Why It Matters

Financial wellness is about more than just managing money, it’s about stewarding the resources God has entrusted to us. Our financial decisions reflect our values and can impact our relationships, sense of security, and ability to serve others. God calls us to be wise stewards, using our finances to honour Him and fulfil His purposes. Aligning our financial practices with biblical principles ensures that we approach money with a heart of generosity, gratitude, and responsibility, rather than stress or greed.

Scripture

  1. Proverbs 3:9-10: “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”
  2. Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”
  3. Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Practical Applications:

  1. Honouring God with Your Wealth
    1. Tithing and Giving: Start by setting aside a portion of your income (10% or more) for tithing. If you’re not already doing so, try to increase your giving gradually. Make it part of your financial routine. Set a goal to give to your church, charity, or those in need each month, knowing that you are honouring God with your resources.
    2. Firstfruits Giving: Proverbs 3:9 encourages us to give the first part of our income. This is a reminder to make God your first priority. Make a habit of allocating your first paycheck of the month to God’s work, before other expenses.

  1. Avoiding the Love of Money
    1. Regularly Assess Your Priorities: Every month, check in with your budget and spending habits. Are you saving and spending in alignment with your values? Are there areas where you may be placing too much importance on material things or keeping up with others? Reflect on how you can shift your financial mindset to focus on eternal values.
    2. Simplify Your Life: Consider simplifying your lifestyle and reducing unnecessary expenses. Start small by decluttering your home and cutting back on non-essential purchases. By doing so, you’ll have more resources available to invest in things that matter most, your faith, family, and community.

  1. Trusting God for Provision
    1. Prayerfully Budget: Take time to pray over your finances. Ask God for wisdom in how to manage your money, as well as for the ability to trust Him when things get tight. Whenever you feel stressed about financial pressure, remind yourself that God will meet your needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

  1. Budgeting with Intentionality
    1. Track Your Expenses: Create a budget to help you track your income and expenses. Apps like Mint or YNAB (You Need A Budget) can help you categorize your spending. Make sure to include savings and giving as part of your budget.
    2. Automate Savings: Set up automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account or retirement fund. This ensures you’re saving regularly and not relying on willpower alone.

  1. Practice Contentment
    1. Mindset Shift: Each time you feel the urge to buy something out of desire rather than need, pause and ask yourself if it’s something you truly need. Practice being content with what you have. Reflect on verses like Philippians 4:12, which reminds us to be content in all circumstances.
    2. Gratitude Journal: Keep a gratitude journal where you write down the things you’re thankful for. Reflecting on the blessings you already have will shift your focus away from materialism and cultivate a heart of thankfulness.

By applying these practical steps, you’ll align your financial practices with biblical principles, create peace of mind around your money, and set yourself up for long-term financial wellness that honours God and His provision.

  1. EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

Why It Matters:

Emotions are part of how God created us, but perseverance requires balance—acknowledging our feelings without letting them control us. Emotional resilience helps us endure life’s ups and downs while staying grounded in faith.

Scriptures:

  1. Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up.”
  2. Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

Application:

  1. When facing emotional challenges, remind yourself that perseverance is a journey of faith. Reflect on Galatians 6:9 as a source of encouragement.
  2. Take time to process your emotions through prayer. Share your struggles and triumphs with God, trusting Him to provide clarity and comfort.
  3. Create a self-care routine that includes activities like journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or engaging in a creative hobby to restore your emotional balance.

  1. MOTIVATION AND PERSEVERANCE

Why It Matters:

The wellness journey requires consistency, even when progress is slow, or obstacles arise. Perseverance isn’t about pushing through alone, it’s about trusting God to sustain you and remembering that He works in His time.

Scriptures:

  1. Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary of doing good…”
  2. Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

Application:

  1. Keep a “victory journal.” Write down small wins, whether it’s choosing water over soda or completing a workout, and thank God for the strength to persevere.
  2. Surround yourself with accountability partners who encourage and pray for you. Share Galatians 6:9 to remind each other to stay the course.

  1. ENCOURAGING OTHERS

Why It Matters:

Wellness isn’t just about personal growth; it’s about lifting others up as well. Encouraging and supporting others strengthens our relationships and reflects God’s love. When we pour into others, we also experience joy and fulfilment and grow a wellness community rooted in the same foundations and principles.

Scriptures:

  1. Hebrews 10:24-25: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another.”
  2. Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Application:

  1. Reach out to someone in your circle who might need encouragement. Share a verse like Hebrews 10:24-25 or a personal prayer to uplift their spirit.
  2. Use your wellness journey as a testimony to inspire others. Share your progress, struggles, and victories, showing how God is working in your life.
  3. Organize a group activity, such as a walk or a wellness challenge, that fosters community and encourages collective growth.

CONCLUSION:

Whew! We have reached the end, out of all the wellness love letters I have shared, this took the most amount of time, hours in fact and tons of research, however, it was all worth it. Psalm 119:11 teaches us to cherish and store God’s Word deeply within our hearts. This act of internalizing scripture in the wellness area of our lives isn’t passive, it’s transformative. When we engrain His Word in our souls, we arm ourselves against the temptations and struggles that threaten our wellness journey. These scriptures are not just words to memorize but truths to live by, deeply engrained in our actions and routines.

Faith and wellness are not separate. By inviting God into every pillar of your journey, you create a life that honours Him, physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually and more. I will be spending quite a considerable amount of time, dedicated to incorporating my faith in my wellness journey. My hope is that these scriptures and applications inspire you to align your wellness routines with your faith, turning every step into an act of worship and every challenge into an opportunity for growth so that we can overcome challenges, grow in resilience, and inspire others to do the same.

Thank you for being part of this shared journey. Together, let’s commit to storing God’s Word in our hearts as the ultimate armour for a life of holistic wellness.

With all the love and blessings,

Jua ♥️
